Nordic Sustainability Arena – A Platform for White Winters

Climate action is crucial for the future of winter sports. On March 7–8, 2025, the Nordic Sustainability Arena (NoSA) will be launched in Åre. This scientifically grounded platform will bring together winter sports and research, along with business and politics, to identify and implement solutions that accelerate climate transition and safeguard our winters and our sport. The conference is being organized in conjunction with the Alpine World Cup in Åre.

“Climate change is a global challenge threatening our sport and the future of our winters. As snow-dependent enthusiasts, we want to take responsibility and drive change. It’s a complex issue since, like many elite athletes and world-class events, we also have an impact on the climate. Through the Nordic Sustainability Arena, we aim to deepen our knowledge, challenge ourselves, and act decisively to accelerate the climate transition,” says Olle Danielsson, CEO of the Alpine World Cup in Åre.

Scientific Foundation

With the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) as a research partner, the Nordic Sustainability Arena and the Alpine World Cup gain a robust scientific basis to tackle climate challenges. SRC has previously collaborated with the music industry, and now it’s time for a focus on sports.

“Winter sports have an important role to play in driving climate transformation and making it inclusive and engaging. At Stockholm Resilience Centre, we look forward to sharing the latest scientific insight and collaborating on how to achieve sustainable development within planetary boundaries,” says Per Olsson, Deputy Science Director at Stockholm Resilience Centre.

A Nordic Approach

There is a strong winter-sports culture in the Nordic region, where many people enjoy winter sports. In Sweden alone, two million people participate in downhill skiing, and the Swedish Ski Association has over 1,200 clubs and 150,000 members. World Cup events are held annually in Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

“Our aim is to harness the strong Nordic passion for winter sports and use it as a driving force to shape a sustainable future together. We want a future that includes snow and attractive international winter-sports events in Sweden and the Nordic region,” says Olle Danielsson.
